Case study for a city fibre optics network

A broad band MAN network (Metropolitan Area Network) in Northern Italy was successfully accomplished using fibre optic cable (Dielectric Self-Supporting fibre optic type). A cable was laid along the electrified support pylons of the public transport tram service. The cable of 96 optical fibres was used support the standard ITU-T G.652.D, known as Low Water Peak (LWP). These fibres allow the efficient employment of the CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology, as defined in the ITU-T G.694.2 standard. This technology allows the user to achieve a much greater bandwidth than more traditional solutions, and at significantly lower cost. The network, with in-built Fault Tolerant criteria, provides a multimedia connection to Head Offices of the Public Transport Service using a Gigabit Ethernet backbone, plus these other services:

• CCTV surveillance of urban traffic movement
• The synchronisation of the traffic lights centralized control system
• The Automation of the Energy Sub Stations (ESS) that provide power to the trams
• Telephone and Internet services to nearby mountains and valleys
